MotherBoard was the inaugural pilot project of the Eisemann Edge Initiative. The site-specific interactive sculpture installation explored the city as a living circuit, where memory, identity, and innovation flow through a shared network. Commissioned for the Virginia Green Mezzanine Gallery at the Charles W. Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas, the installation comprises three sculptural relief panels titled “Past, Present, and Future.”
Designed and directed by Andrew F. Scott in collaboration with the LightSquad at the University of Texas at Dallas, MotherBoard combines steel, plexiglass, cardboard, fabric, LEDs, and sensors to create a responsive experience. Each panel invites viewers into an evolving visual landscape. As visitors move through the space, embedded sensors activate shifting light patterns and sound textures that reflect the region’s technological and cultural evolution.
The Past panel references early digital systems through analog sounds and nostalgic visuals. The Present features holographic displays and projection-mapped video portraits that celebrate the people and places that define contemporary Richardson. The Future is a speculative structure built around a Janus-headed figure with pulsating LED circuitry that evokes artificial intelligence and networked consciousness.
Under Scott’s direction, students worked across design, fabrication, and programming to bring the project to life. MotherBoard exemplifies the mission of the Eisemann Edge Initiative by integrating public art, creative technology, and education. It transforms a gallery wall into a dynamic narrative interface, where viewers activate memory and meaning through interaction and movement.
