Everglades
Projection Mapped Sculpture Inspired by Terence Blanchard’s “Breathless”
Everglades is a projection-mapped sculpture inspired by the epic-length musical composition of the same name by Fabian Almazan, featured on Terence Blanchard’s 2015 album Breathless. Rich in layered harmonies and evocative of the environment, the piece unfolds in multiple movements, offering a structural and emotional roadmap for visual exploration.
Everglades offers an invitation to experience music as a spatial encounter, one that unfolds across time, form, and atmosphere.
Responding to the intricate textures of Almazan’s score, the artist developed a sculptural environment that functions as both canvas and instrument. Static forms are animated through a system of parametric responses, light, motion, and image modulated by the underlying musical data. In this immersive study, the sonic landscape catalyzes visual transformation, fostering an embodied relationship between sound and structure.
Through the use of sound synthesis techniques, elements such as pitch, tempo, and dynamic range directly inform the projection’s behavior. The result is a fluid choreography of illumination, where the sculpture shifts and breathes in tandem with the music’s evolving energy. This work marks a pivotal moment in the artist’s practice, helping to define a visual language rooted in the activation of form through sound.
